Sue’s Sassy Grass XS650
This bike began as a VW bug??… I’ll let Rick explain.
Here’s Rick and Sue’s story:
It all started when we traded a custome VW bug for a XS650 bobber with enough bonus parts to almost build another bike. My wife Sue and I have owned and customized many bikes over the years, but never tried a complete build. With the pile of parts, including a weld on hardtail, we took on the challenge. We found a very nice (almost too nice) XS650 to cut apart. With a garage full of tools and many visiting friends the first winter we cut, welded, grinded, swap meet searched, drank, planned and ended up with a bobber all mocked up.
Then it was summer time so we played with our other bikes and took a break from building. The second winter we took it all apart and painted the tank and fenders after changing our color 7 or 8 times.
One more thing, our die hard Harley friend Larry watched and helped with the project. All the time he talked about bobbing an old Harley because it had to be “HD”. Well he is now building his own XS650 bobber.
Shortly after that Sue rode her new bobber to local motorcycle show and took second place in the garage built class and people’s choice for best bike at the show. Since then I’ve started another bobber for myself and we just bought another project for Sue…this time pink with ape hangers….stay tuned for pics.
Oh yeah you wanted stats: 1980 XS650 with a TC bros weld on hardtail, faux oil tank, forward controls and battery box with a memorial dog collar hold down strap. The exhaust is from bros mfg. The tank, rear fender, mirrors, seat and other miscellaneous parts we found at swap meets. Overall build including donor bike, all parts needed, paint (mopar sassy grass green) and pinstripe all for under $2000.00. Can’t beat that!!!!!
